Air Asia will start flights between Kuala Lumpur and Tokyo

Malaysia’s AirAsia has announced plans to inaugurate flights to Kuala Lumpur and Tokyo’s Haneda airport on 9 December. The connection will make the airline the first low-cost overseas carrier to serve Haneda airport, which is due to open for expanded international flights in late October, The Japan Times reported.

Haneda airport is the main domestic hub for Tokyo but due to congestion in Narita, it will start receiving international flights next month, TheStarOnline reported.

AirAsia is expected to price fares for its thrice-weekly flights far lower than those of existing services offered by Japan Airlines and Malaysia Airlines. Both these airlines currently fly between Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Narita International Airport.

To fend off the low-cost competition from six carriers from China and Southeast Asia, both Japanese carriers – Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways (ANA) – are looking to introduce budget offshoots.
